ENGLISH COMPETENCE NEEDED BY ICT DEPARTMENT STUDENTS

Abstract

“This research aimed to identify English competence needed by the students of Information Communication, and Technology (ICT) Department of Telkom Applied Science School at Telkom University (TASS Tel U) Bandung, during the course of their studies related with communication activities performance. This competence is also preparing them in challenging the competitiveness in global era for their work as ICT specialists at national and international level in their future. The research was descriptive-qualitative method, which result a descriptive data in the form of written words or statements from people and behavior observed. The data are investigated and generated from the participants??? answer on the interview and the result of observation activity. The sources of data were the ICT students, the English lecturers and the dean. The obtained data described the ICT competencies related with the successfully perform English competencies in term of communicative competence. The research identified the English competency needed by ICT department students related with the communication activities, which integrates the needs of English competency of ICT department students. The competencies in ICT department students in term of English communication were addressed explicitly in the interview and implicitly in the observation. They were; giving skills and understanding to the students about strategy and sentence structure in order to help their reading skill in English text, especially for the functional text types in descriptive, procedure, and recount; then analyzing the relationship between theory and practice in making English functional texts; and giving skill and understanding to the students about how to perform English presentation effectively. Those required competences are needed in order to perform those international communication activities successfully.
