Abstract
English involving the four skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing is considered uneasy by EFL learners in Indonesia as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia. Due to this perception, Motivation is considered as one of important psychological factors that can trigger someone to accomplish his goal particularly in learning context. Particularly in EFL, it has been discussed as a crucial issue by many researchers due to its role in learning betterment. In this qualitative research, the investigated motivation is focused on the aspects of Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction which is known as ARCS model designed by John Keller that provides a systemic motivational design instructions starting from the motivational strategies implemented in project-based writing activity to its assessment. This case study is also aimed to describe how the 38 Visual Communication Design students, in a private university in Bandung, West-Java, Indonesia, implemented the writing project, and their difficulties as English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners. A triangulation method using Observation, Questionnaire (Instructional Material Motivational Survey/IMMS) measuring students??? reaction to self-directed instructional materials, and an interview involving 12 students from all the 6 small groups made validated the research findings. The findings show though the students were motivated in the aspects of Attention, Relevance and Satisfaction, their motivation in Confidence aspect was neutrally engaged because of some challenges they encountered in this project-based writing activity, particularly in time management, team management, and the writing content management. However, it was also found that the students experienced the benefits characters of this project-based writing activity.
