Abstract

The role of small and medium enterprises (known as UKM) in a nations economy has been proven. In time of crisis, they prove to be able to survive. In fact they easily adapt with the situation. Despite their importance, they represent by only a small number of the population, which is around 1.56%. compared to Malaysia and Singapore, we still had a lot to catch up. Still, that small number contribute to the society. Nowadays, when thecnology become abundant, stil the UKM reluctant to apply itu for their business. There many reasons such as, the investment cost, the lack of human reources, which hindered the adoption of such technology. The development and the competition demand the UKM to adjust with the market. Sooner or later, if they want to succed, they must use the technology. One of the technology broadly applied for the small business is the internet and the websites. Eventhough for some of the UKM this technology still beyond their reach, most of the UKM already using it to enhance their business. One of them is the Dian Utama, small business owned by a family, already optimized the website to broaden their market. They use the technology to increase the awareness of their services. It succed. We will explore the reason why they decide to apply the technology and then identify the success factors. The finding show the reason for the adoption of websites is just merely a marketing goals. They want to expand their business and one of the cheapest tools is by using the internet. They had 25% customer increase since launching the site. They success factor, according to the source, is their courage to try new things in an old successful business model. The other was that the owner (second generation), had knowledge about the technology and realizing its potential to support their business.
