Abstract

“Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is closely related with the concept of sustainability. Existing studies of CSR commonly discuss it in accordance with sustainable development. However, the exact position of CSR and its role in efforts of achieving sustainability still need to be addressed clearly. Therefore, this exploratory study aims to propose a conceptual model that is able to depict how CSR takes a part in alignment with sustainable development literally. A deductive approach is applied in this study by finding constructs to build the conceptual framework through literature review of previous studies. The proposed framework is theoretically derived from the concepts of stakeholder management, triple bottom line, and sustainable development. This study reveals a distinctive commentation that CSR is no longer considered as merely an obligation nor a philanthropy of a company. Moreover, CSR should not place a company in a superior point against its stakeholders, but it ought to regard a company as a partner and a part of community. Thus, CSR is a continuously collaborative development synergizing a company and its stakeholders in managing limited resources through empowerment which puts a company as an enabler to generate mutual benefits for all parties in a long-term dimension.
